Well, the point is that what you wrote isn't Peter Singer's position. (He neither claims the same moral status for all animal species nor does he say we should treat them the same.)

Regarding interests: As you wrote yourself, "birds do experience pain and probably suffer from it". I would argue that the avoidance of suffering counts as interest.
